Hiu Chok Ngian, William Age: 56 William was previously a successful businessman. About 20 years ago after a road accident, he discovered he had glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa. After losing his sight, William became withdrawn and mostly helped out with chores at home. It was in recent years that he resumed an active social life. Though William is the most senior among the guides, his fitness level impresses even sedentary youngsters half his age. A loyal participant of the Standard Chartered Marathon for more than six years, he also takes part in both recreational and competitive activities against both sighted opponents and those with visual impairments. William was crowned champion in an international archery competition for people with disabilities in 2007. Joining DiD has not only offered William a chance to constantly acquire knowledge, but also gave him an opportunity to widen his social circle. He endearingly addresses the colleagues he has befriended as his “family”. |
